SELANK

Selank is a synthetic heptapeptide anxiolytic constructed by appending the stabilizing tripeptide Pro-Gly-Pro to the C-terminus of tuftsin (Thr-Lys-Pro-Arg), an endogenous tetrapeptide fragment of immunoglobulin G that modulates innate immune function. Research has characterized its anxiolytic profile as comparable in magnitude to classical benzodiazepines, with the added attributes of antiasthenic and mild psychostimulant properties not observed with standard anxiolytic reference compounds, and without measurable physical dependence in preclinical assessments. Mechanistic investigations have identified allosteric modulation of GABA-A receptor activity and downstream changes in the expression of genes governing GABAergic, serotonergic, and dopaminergic neurotransmission in the frontal cortex as candidate mechanisms underlying its observed behavioral effects.
