MOTS-C is a 16-amino acid peptide encoded within the mitochondrial 12S ribosomal RNA gene, classified as a mitochondrial-derived peptide (MDP) with a highly conserved sequence across multiple mammalian species. Its primary research area centers on metabolic regulation and insulin sensitivity, with mechanistic studies identifying activation of the AMPK pathway — particularly through the folate-AICAR-AMPK axis — as central to its effects on glucose uptake, glycolysis, and fatty acid oxidation in skeletal muscle.
